On 3 December 2004 at the East Grinstead Poetry Café, Peredur Centre for the Arts, East Grinstead, he gave a poetry reading with the speech artist and therapist Louise Coigley. Entitled ‘Dancing Words’, the programme was built mainly round Beauty, Be My Brahman, his recently published collection of poems with India connections (see Recent Books). From 6 to 9 July 2004, he attended the 18th European Conference of Modern South Asian Studies at Lund University, Sweden, contributing a paper to the Bengal Studies panel but also writing an officially commissioned diary of the conference. To read the diary ('Swedish Rhapsody') go to www.sasnet.lu.se/EASAS18.html On 15 June 2004, at a memorial service for Siew-Yue Killingley (17 December 1940 – 8 June 2004), William Radice spoke about her achievements as a poet and publisher of poetry. On 27 February 2004, he gave the address at the funeral of Mrs Kathleen Mascaró at Cambridge Crematorium. To read the address, click here. On 21 February 2004, Bengali Language Martyrs’ Day, he gave a talk on ‘The internationalisation of Bengali language and literature’ to the Bangladesh Europe Friendship Society in Brussels. The event, which also included songs and recitations, was held at the Al-Mandaloun restaurant. On 9 February 2004 he gave a lecture at Rice University, Houston, Texas, entitled ‘Confession versus the exclamation mark: why Rabindranath Tagore did not like the poetry of Michael Madhusudan Dutt’. On 10 February he gave a poetry reading at the Rothko Chapel, Houston, based on his new book: Beauty, Be My Brahman: Indian Poems (see Recent Books). On 22 May 2003 he gave a lecture in the Department of Asiatic Studies, Università Ca’ Foscari, Venice, on ‘Michael Madhusudan Datta: a Bengali poet with Italian connections’. In February and March 2003, William Radice was in India and Bangladesh for six weeks.
